Associates & companions of cor jesu
In addition to its professed members, the Cor Jesu Society may welcome Associates (clergy) and Companions (laity), who desire to share in the spiritual charism and apostolic mission of the Society while remaining in their proper state of life.
Associates and Companions do not profess vows nor assume juridical membership in the Society. Rather, they freely enter into a spiritual affiliation with the Society in order to participate in its prayer, formation, and pastoral mission according to their vocation and circumstances.
Through this affiliation, Associates and Companions share spiritually in the life of the Society, particularly its devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and its three principal charisms:
Reverent celebration of the sacred liturgy according to the tradition of the Catholic Church
Ongoing theological, scriptural, and spiritual formation
Pastoral service to the People of God, especially those on the margins
Associates and Companions are welcomed by the Superior General or his delegate after a period of discernment and formation appropriate to the nature of their affiliation.
Their participation expresses the ancient ecclesial principle that the gifts of a religious charism are given not only for the members of an institute but for the good of the whole Church.
rule of life for associates & companions
Associates and Companions of the Cor Jesu Society seek to unite their lives more deeply to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to live in communion with the mission and spirit of the Society.
According to their state of life, they commit themselves to the following practices:
1. A Life of Prayer
Associates and Companions strive to cultivate a daily rhythm of prayer. They are encouraged to pray each day for the Church and the mission of the Cor Jesu Society, and, when possible, to participate regularly in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
2. Devotion to the Sacred Heart
They foster a personal devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the source of priestly charity, pastoral compassion, and missionary love.
3. Ongoing Formation
Associates and Companions seek continual growth in faith through the study of Sacred Scripture, the teachings of the Church, and participation in the Society’s programs of theological and spiritual formation.
4. Charity in Pastoral Life
In their families, parishes, ministries, and professions, they strive to embody the mercy and charity of Christ, particularly toward those who suffer, are forgotten, or dwell on the margins of society.
5. Communion with the Society
Associates and Companions maintain a spirit of communion with the Cor Jesu Society through prayer, participation in gatherings when possible, and support for the mission of the Society.
After a suitable period of discernment, Associates and Companions may be formally welcomed through a simple rite of reception.
At this reception they may pray:
“Ad Cor Jesu accedo — To the Heart of Jesus I draw near.
May the charity of Christ shape my life and guide my service to the Church.”
